As a final intern in a first-grade classroom, it was important to find hands-on activities that aligned with state standards. For six and seven year olds, they have a high need for engaging and creative activities. One way I did this was when I taught the phases of the Moon. Instead of just having them show the phases by shading with a pencil, we used Oreos to create a Moon Phase Cycle. Although we discussed all of the phases, we only did four of the phases that were most important for students to identify.
